The Greeks and later the Egyptians carried both astrology and astronomy far beyond the limits attained by the Babylonians.

The theory of the precession of the equinoxes was propounded by the Greek astronomer Hipparchus around 130 BC. But this single advancement in pure science could not prevent the Greeks from developing the theory of the influence of the planets upon the fate of the individual.
The most significant contribution of the Greeks to astrology was the endeavour to trace the horoscope of the individual from the position of the planets and stars at the time of birth. This system was later carried to such a degree of perfection so that later ages adopted the system with few additions.
